Frederick County Public Schools will again be offering a pilot preschool program during the 2018-19 school year. The program will serve 54 selected four-year-olds residing in the Apple Pie Ridge, Gainesboro, Indian Hollow, Redbud Run and Stonewall elementary school attendance zones. Parents who would like their child to be considered for admission in the preschool program, may submit a preliminary application at the preschool student’s base school beginning March 5.

Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, “Our pilot preschool program has proven successful in helping some of our at-risk students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in school. We are pleased that a grant from the Virginia Department of Education will fully fund the preschool program again in 2018-19. We’re looking forward to serving 54 more students and their families through this initiative.”

Only students residing in the Apple Pie Ridge, Gainesboro, Indian Hollow, Redbud Run and Stonewall elementary school attendance zones who will be four years of age on or before September 30, 2018, are eligible to apply for the preschool program. In addition, the maximum family income for program participants must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty rates. (see attached table). Families are to include the following as income- employment earnings; unemployment and workers’ compensation payments; Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits; public assistance payments (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or TANF); veterans’ benefits payments; survivor benefit payments; pension and retirement income; interest and dividends; rents and royalties; income from estates and trusts; income from educational assistance, alimony and child support; financial assistance from outside the household.

After preliminary applications have been processed, the school division will contact the families of those students who meet the eligibility requirements to have them complete a full registration packet. Once the full registration packet is completed, the applications will be assessed with admission to the program being offered by the week of April 30 to those students who are determined to realize the greatest educational benefit from participating in preschool. Completing the registration packet does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

There is no cost for students to attend the preschool program and Frederick County Public Schools will provide transportation to and from school for all program participants as well as breakfast, lunch and snacks each day. The program will operate according to the Frederick County Public Schools 2018-19 School Calendar.

The preschool classes will utilize the VPI+ curriculum which is based on Virginia’s Foundation Blocks for Early Learning: Comprehensive Standards for Four-Year-Olds. The standards cover literacy, mathematics, science, history and social science, physical and motor development as well as personal and social development. Students will also participate in music, art, library and physical education programs. In addition to providing high-quality preschool experiences and activities to students, the program will provide focused outreach to families as well as individualized support for children with unique learning needs, including students with disabilities and English language learners.
