Area High School Students to Join in Special Performance
The James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes will be the featured performer during halftime of Sherando High School’s football game against Washington High School on Friday, September 9. The game begins at 7 p.m. At halftime, the Marching Royal Dukes will perform their full show which will include a special finale during which students from Sherando and several other area high schools will participate. The other schools currently confirmed to participate include Central High School, Rappahannock High School, Strasburg High School and Stonewall Jackson High School. The marching bands from James Wood and Millbrook high schools are unable to participate because they will be performing that night at football games being hosted at their respective schools.
Sherando High School Director of Bands Joel Cosner, a 2011 graduate of James Madison University and former member of the Marching Royal Dukes, says, “It is a great honor for Sherando to host the band known as ‘Virginia’s Finest’. The Marching Royal Dukes is comprised of nearly 500 members. They will put on an incredible show for the community. I’m also very excited about giving our students and others from across the area the opportunity to perform with such an esteemed band. It promises to be a memorable evening for our students as well as those who get to witness the performance.”
Since being established in 1972, the Marching Royal Dukes have become one of the best known and largest college marching bands in the country. The band has performed at NFL games in Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburgh as well as the inaugural parades for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The Marching Royal Dukes have also performed at the inauguration ceremonies for four Virginia governors.
The band has also marched in three Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, the 25th London Silver Anniversary New Year’s Parade and the Rome New Year’s Parade during a tour of Italy in 2014-15.
The special performance is expected to attract a large crowd and those planning to attend the game are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. A special ticket presale will be offered at the Sherando High School office on Thursday, September 8, and Friday, September 9. Tickets will also be available at the gate. All tickets are $5.
